Periodontology aims to preserve and treat the supporting tissues of the tooth, referred to as the periodontium as a whole. The periodontium includes both soft tissues (periodontal ligament and gingiva) and hard tissues (root cementum and alveolar bone), which, under healthy conditions, ensure the stability of the tooth.
Diseases that affect the periodontium are gingivitis and periodontitis. Periodontitis, also called periodontal disease, periodontal disease or commonly pyorrhea, is a chronic inflammatory disease. Symptoms, such as bleeding or swelling of the gums, mobility or shifting of the teeth, and increased sensitivity to heat and cold, are alarm bells and indicate the need to undergo a specialized periodontal evaluation.
The bacteria responsible for gum inflammation tend to increase the risk of systemic diseases, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, stroke, and respiratory infections.
Dr. Natalia Filice has attended numerous courses in Periodontology, the Master’s Degree Level II in Periodontology at the University of Pisa, the PhD in Experimental Periodontology at the University of Milan-Bicocca, has written several articles for Italian and international journals on periodontitis, participated in the project “Periodontal disease as emergent systemic pathology: development of a new clinical unit for patients global health care” by Prof. Filippo Graziani and is a member of SIdP (Italian Society of Periodontology).
Dr. Natalia Filice is very passionate about the treatment of gingivitis and periodontitis, following the patient step by step, in the initial non-surgical phase, in the eventual surgical phase and in the maintenance phase.
